Is it permissible to trim the sides of the beard ?
Is it permissible to trim the sides of a beard. I ask this because i found these reports: In the Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shaybah:
Wakee narrated to us, from Sufyaan, from Mansoor, from Ibraaheem (an-Nakha’ee) who said, “They used to take something from and tidy their beards and take from the sides.”
And Baghawi narrated: Ibrahim [al-Nakha’i, d. 108/726] said, ‘They [the Sahaba] used to trim their beards on the sides'” (Sharh al-sunna, 12.1089).
‘Ata’ [ibn Abi Rabah, Mufti of Mecca, d. 114/732), has said, “There is no harm in trimming a little from the length and sides of his beard, if it grows large and long, in order to avoid notoriety, or if one risks being made fun of” (‘Umda al-qari sharh Sahih al-Bukhari. 20 vols. Cairo: Mustafa Babi al-Halabi, 1392/1972, 18.76)
Also in a fatwa i found this narration but no source was mentioned: Ibrahim Al Nakhai’ said: They used to trim their beard (to shorten its length) and take from its width.
My question is; I have a fist lenght beard on all the sides of my face, but my sideburns look so wide and bushy and curly. Is it aloud to make the sides shorther then a fist length ?
To what extent can i trim my sides (left and right side) maximumally ? And to which extent can i trim it from its length (downwards) maximumally ?
If the beard is longer than one fist, then it will be permissible to trim it. The same rule will apply to the sides as well. (i.e. if the beard is longer than one fist it will be permissible to trim it.)
And Allah Ta’aala knows best
